Week 2: Moving forward
This week I learn about two different things: using different search engines on internet and writing objectives of teaching. Articles about types of search engines and the tips to search web are very valuable since they do not only provide me with important information about different search engines but also help me realized that so far I have used the internet without really pay attention to the types of search engines I used. I nave never really thought of the engine types and the effective method of searching.
Writing articles about teaching objectives and the ABCD Model make me realized my weaknesses in teaching. Although I always write a syllabus for every subject I teach, I , however, never really consider the right terms to use for the cognitive objective. Thinking of applying a technology to my class and writing the teaching objectives using the model is very exciting. I am planning to ask my students to make and use a class blog in my Intermediate Listening class for the rest of this semester. The blog is intended as a media to enhance their learning behavior and improve their listening skills and at the same time develop their writing and speaking ability. The students will use the blog to post a video of their own about different topics. I limit the topics to ones about Minangkabau culture and tradition (food, arts, practices. The students will share their videos on the blog and also present and discuss them in the class. They will learn to use the Google map and create their own map to show where their video are made.

Hi Rina,
ReplyDeleteI did the same - for several years I've used a few search engines and I've never thought that changing the usual way and trying something new would bring not only new search engines in my research but some kind of open-mindedness, new inspiration, new ideas.
And I liked ABCD Model as it helped me not only define goals of the lesson but determine to what degree students should assimilate new material and it should be done very exactly. because before students were supposed to "learn and attain all 100% accuracy".
This course teaches us not only to form, develop and master our webskills but to improve our "traditional" skills and aspire to be a Teacher.
Hi Olga.
DeleteI aggree that using our webskills and other technology in combination with our "traditional" ways of teaching will make a real revolution in teaching. You see, at the beginning I was at a loss when I saw ABCD model at the first time, but step by step I realized its aims. Now I am trying to involve it to my teaching.
Hello Rina,
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you through this online program. I am Rudi Hartono from Universitas Negeri Semarang (Unnes), Central Java-Indonesia. It was a hard work you did, wasn't it? Don't worry, be happy. Everything will be okay in your job. It is very nice to teach Intermediate Listening class, you can practice listening more and you must be good at listening. Listening is a very difficult lesson I think; however, it can be fun as far as we love and like it. By the way, you have tried to visit some search engines that contain media for listening, besides YouTube, such as www.blinkx.com, FreeBookSearch, net, www.findsounds.com, www.pbs.com, www.podscope.com, www.singingfish.com, http://www.dailymotion.com, http://www.5min.com, http://www.abcnews.go.com/, http://video.aol.com, etc. But of course it is very difficult for you to find out Listening materials that have relation to the Culture and Tradition of Minangkabau. I think you should create your own listening tapes or videos for your classroom, even you can produce many for promoting our Indonesian cultures and traditions to all people in the world. Good luck. Visit my blog (http://e-teachingweb.blogspot.com/). Thanks. See you then.
Hello Rudi.
DeleteNice to know you too. Thank you for your comment and information about search engines for listening materials. You are right. Teaching listening is challenging, This is my first class after I came back to campus. At the beginning, I had difficulties to find proper and interesting materials for the subject. I used YouTube as the source. In fact, this course enlightened my insight and aspired me to use blog for my listening class. Thank you for your suggestion . I'll check the search engines soon.
Hi Rina,
ReplyDeleteIt is very happy to read your blog. It is true as you said that we have used the search engines without really paying attention to their types and effective ways of using them. This is something we learn from the course. As you mentioned you are planning to ask your students to make their own blog, I really think a blog could be a place where the students can communicate with each other and exchange information, but I have never thought about including it in our teaching. It is really a brilliant idea!
Hi Li,
DeleteNice to meet you through this online course. We need to know more each other, though. Thank you for your comment. You are right. We have new knowledge now about different search engine. We can make use of the available search engines and facilities available on the internet. Yes, blog is one brilliat choice since student can do writing, reading, even speaking and listening. Today I am so glad since I was finally, successful uploading my short video from my iPad to my blog through YouTube. I was so worried for not being able to do it since the students will use the technology later. students
Hi Rina,
ReplyDeleteNice to get to know you in this class.
I am Fan Yang, coming from the Harbin Institute of Technology. Like you, I have been using Google as my primary search engine and have never thought of trying others. I must admit that Google is perhaps the most powerful search engine on the planet with its advantages of being comprehensive, easy to access, easy to search, user friendly and so on. But its disadvantages should not be ignored. For example, it lists not only credible, suitable sources but incredible, unsuitable sources; even it may lead to wrong information. With the recommendation of the instructor Sean, we are realizing that there are other search engines available to look for the information we need. Information seekers should choose the best engine depending on the information types they are looking for. It is fun and exciting to learn something new, isn’t it?.
I am also thinking about creating a class blog to provide a platform for my students to interact, for the teacher to take advantage of students’ curiosity about technology, thus increasing their use of English language. It seems there is much to do in the respect of applying technology. We both teach at college. Hope to communicate more with you later. Good luck.
Best Regards,
Fan
